January Transition Events
January 16, 2012

Join us for a three part series on the challenges of I.E.P. /504 students moving into a new Scituate school setting in fall 2012.


Each workshop will feature classroom teachers, special education teachers, guidance counselors and principals to share their best advice for helping easy the transition of special needs students moving into a new school setting.

***The first workshop was held on Tuesday January 10th @ 7pm at Hatherly School Library. A very special thank you to Ellen Burke, Special Education Teacher, Mari-An Fitzmaurice Principal, Jeanne Crehan, Kindergarten Teacher and Judy Kelleher, Speech/Language Pathologist! The panel provided parents with tips on transitioning from the Early Childhood Center to Elementary School. Again, a big thank you to all who participated!

MCAS Access and Achievement for Students with Disabilities: The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is a tool to measure progress in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks or general curriculum. This workshop will help parents understand how their children with disabilities can participate in MCAS in a meaningful way to demonstrate what they have learned. Discussion will include standard and non-standard accommodations and alternate assessments.

The Scituate Town Library will host free parenting workshops February 28th and March 27th
January 19, 2012

The Scituate Town Library will host free parenting workshops from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Catherine Sargent, the presenter for both workshops, has a masters in counseling psychology and a certificate in early intervention. She co-founded the Building Connections Through Play program at Step One Early Intervention in Quincy, and has worked as a behavioral therapist and consultant for 12 years.

The workshop, Helping Your Child to Develop Better Eating Habits, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Workshop, Moving Past Defiance and Tantrums, will be held Tuesday, March 27.

The workshops are sponsored by the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Program of the South Shore Community Action Council.

iDevices for Beginners Presented by Easter Seals
March 28th

This presentation will touch upon the latest iDevices on the market from the perspective of a new user. We will talk about the latest operating system iOS5 and the importance of backing up your device. Also we will discuss general settings, built-in accessibility features, the art of gestures, and learn how to select and download quality apps. It is designed to get one off the starting block in this world of iDevices. Attendees are welcome to bring their iDevices.

Youth Health Connection is thrilled to announce that on March 27, 2012 we will be hosting two, yes two, programs with Dr. Robert Brooks.

Dr. Brooks is a leading speakers on the themes of resilience, motivation, and family relationships. During the past 30 years, Dr. Brooks has presented nationally and internationally to thousands of parents, educators, mental health professionals, and business people with a message based on encouragement, hope, and resilience. He is renowned for the warmth and humor he uses to bring his insights and anecdotes to life.

Both events will be held in the auditorium at Notre Dame Academy, 1073 Main St. Hingham, MA.

The afternoon event entitled The Power of Mindsets: Nurturing Motivation and Resilience in Students will be held from 3:30‐5:30 PM and is intended for school personnel.

The evening event is entitled Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents and this program is for parents and will be held from 7:00‐8:30 PM.

These events have been made possible through the generous support of the Social Service League of Cohasset.

Both programs are FREE!
